Two new LEPs added to Observatory

by Etienne and Kim

The Smart Specialisation Hub is pleased to announce the launch of two more LEPs as part of its ongoing project compiling a working comparative framework.

New LEPs, new data

Following on from last month’s profile launch for the Lancashire and Sheffield City Region LEPs, the Smart Spec data analytics team have now released data for two further LEPs: Coventry & Warwickshire, and Greater Birmingham & Solihull.

These two latest LEPs are presented in the updated data format, introduced last month. Details of this updated format can be found here.

Intra-regional differences

The data presented is a good example of the possible differences between two LEPs in the same region. Whilst they share some significant innovation strengths, these align to slightly different domains in business or research. The two summary tables are provided below for comparison.

In the background

Keep an eye out in February for the next round of LEP page launches. Next month, we will be releasing analysis and charts for the Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly and West of England LEPs. This will then complete LEP profiling for the South West region.

In addition, our data analytics team has been working on how best and most fairly to compare multiple LEPs’ performance with regard to the indicators we have set out as part of our framework. The team aim to provide a format that provides the right level of analytical detail, whilst also allowing for user-friendly visualisations and comparison. An example of this work can be seen below.

How the chart works

The line graph above shows the publication output for the first six of the Hub’s LEPs to be profiled based on the eight Great Technologies, one of our framework indicators. Further analysis will be available upon release of these charts.

Work is currently ongoing to build and launch the comparative function of the Hub’s Observatory platform, and further updates will be provided as work continues.
