The Smart Specialisation Team is proud to present its first Annual Report, detailing the story and progress of Smart Specialisation across England. It provides living examples of Smart Specialisation at every stage, from a range of LEP areas and from our Hub partners and collaborators.

The proof’s in the doing

As the Hub, one of our responsibilities is to highlight good practice across the country. One of the enduring satisfactions of our work is the opportunity to see first-hand the sort of work being done on the ground through the use of Smart Specialisation.[edsanimate_end]

Regional innovation – as told by England’s regions

And, with the recent launch of our Observatory, the evidence base with which they can prioritise investment into their most productive sectors has become even more accessible.

This is the foundation of what we present in our inaugural Annual Report. The Report is primarily a short collection of Smart Specialisation-oriented case studies kindly presented by our partners and collaborators.

We have received contributions from all over the country, detailing aspects of all stages of the Smart Specialisation journey; from those just starting out, to those currently in progress, and even those who are ready to move on to the next stage.

Annual Report – an opportunity to look forward

This is why, over the next month, we will be presenting case studies from other contributors, demonstrating further perspectives on the work that the Hub plans to do.

We also look forward to continuing to support the second wave of Science and Innovation Audits recently announced by Government, whether through facilitating collaborations, helping to make sense of the data or simply acting as a critical friend.

As we said in our previous blog post, we look forward to working with Government on the implementation of the upcoming Industrial Strategy. We also anticipate being able to provide further live demonstrations of the work being done to integrate this Strategy into place-based innovation.[edsanimate_end]

We would be delighted to discuss its contents, explore future collaborative work and reflect on the direction of travel with regard to the local innovation landscape with potential partners. If you have any questions or comments, please do get in touch.[edsanimate_end]
